The RAF’s Valiant V-bombers were regular visitors to Gan in the 1960’s together with Vulcans and Victors. These magnificent machines were often on their way to Australia to take part in weapons testing programmes at the Woomera Rocket Range. The Vulcans and Victors were equipped to carry Britons Nuclear deterrent missile, “Blue Steel”. This was rocket powered and took up most of a V-Bomber’s bomb bay making it very difficult to load into the aircraft. “Blue Steel” began to enter service with the V bombers in 1962 and maintained the British deterrent until Polaris became available. The last V-bomber flight with “Blue Steel” on board took place on 21st December 1969. |
